You may have read in an earlier blog that The Hope Academy Council had its first meeting a few weeks ago. I thought you’d like to know a bit more about what the young people said.

We ended up with 5 main points:

1. You want help with school work both in and outside school. Help with homework was mentioned quite a lot, including having a mentor for homework/school work. One idea was getting together with a mentor at an after school homework club.

2. You want to have a say in choosing your school.

3. You want to be able to take part in more activities out of school and also for adults to make it easier for you to go on school camps/trips.

4. You want help with planning your future – ideas and help to plan what you can do in the future after you leave school.

5. You want support and advice on things like bullying, staying out of trouble, knowing right from wrong and making better and new friends.

We are letting schools, social workers and Reviewing Officers* know about these 5 points and we hope they will discuss them with you to find out what your ideas are on how they can be made better. You can also email Bev at beverley.leeson@bristol.gov.uk to let us know what you think. Bev works with me on The Hope Academy Council meetings so she’ll know what to do with your message.

Next time, we’re going to talk about what makes school good for a child in care. You can email Bev your ideas about that too if you want – it would be really good to hear from you. I’ll let you know how the next meeting goes.
