Where will I live?

Your Personal Advisor will help you make decisions about your accommodation when you are ready to leave care.

Some young people will move into a privately rented flat or bed-sit. If you think this is the type of accommodation you will need, you can talk to your Personal Advisor about this, and the Care and After Team will look at your circumstances and see if they can offer you a package of support.

There are also a number of supported accommodation options in Bristol which you can discuss further with your Personal Advisor.

Alternatively you may want to apply for Bristol City Council Housing using the Homechoice system but again seek advice from the Care and After Team before doing so as they will be able to advise you on your application.

There are many options available to you when you leave care:

  • Supported housing - various options within this offering differing levels of support. Both self contained and shared accommodation are available. Accessed via one application form.
  • Supported lodgings - a room to rent in someone's home and enables you to develop the life skills needed to live in your own accommodation.
  • Council tenancy - your own place rented from the housing department
  • Private renting - your own place rented from a private landlord
  • Staying Put - a pilot project enabling young people to stay in their foster placement after they reach 18 years old

Your Personal Advisor will have more detail on all these and a DVD showing young people giving their views is available to watch.
