November 2011
The HOPE student council met last week and we talked about the results and thought about ideas to try to help our pupils to do even better because children who are not in care are doing better than The HOPE’s pupils. We know that you are just as able as other young people, so we want to look at what can be done to help you do even better.
We will have more news on this early next year because the student council will be talking about it again at their next meeting. If you have any ideas about what anyone can do to help The HOPE’s pupils do even better at school, please email Bev Leeson and she will add them to the list.
The HOPE student council also discussed how to get a logo for the school. They decided we should have a competition so plans are being made to organise that. Keep visiting this site to find out how to enter!
If there is something about education that you would like The HOPE student council to know about or discuss, please email Bev Leeson and she will let the student council members know.
March 2011
What was said at the first meeting of The Hope (virtual school for children in care) Student Council?
You may have read in an earlier blog that The Hope Student Council had its first meeting a few weeks ago. I thought you’d like to know a bit more about what the young people said.
We ended up with 5 main points:
1. You want help with school work both in and outside school. Help with homework was mentioned quite a lot, including having a mentor for homework/school work. One idea was getting together with a mentor at an after school homework club.
2. You want to have a say in choosing your school.
3. You want to be able to take part in more activities out of school and also for adults to make it easier for you to go on school camps/trips.
4. You want help with planning your future – ideas and help to plan what you can do in the future after you leave school.
5. You want support and advice on things like bullying, staying out of trouble, knowing right from wrong and making better and new friends.
We are letting schools, social workers and Reviewing Officers* know about these 5 points and we hope they will discuss them with you to find out what your ideas are on how they can be made better. You can also email Bev at beverley.leeson@bristol.gov.uk to let us know what you think. Beverley works with me on The Hope Student Council meetings so she’ll know what to do with your message.
Next time, we’re going to talk about what makes school good for a child in care. You can email Beverley your ideas about that too if you want – it would be really good to hear from you. I’ll let you know how the next meeting goes.
The School Council met in May to discuss what makes school good for children in care and what we would like to see happening in school to make things better for us. Click here for more details.
